The Anatomy of a Hardwood Floor: What Every Homeowner Should Know

Hardwood flooring may seem simple—just wood, right? But behind every beautiful plank is a world of structure, style, and science. At Above Board Flooring, we believe educated homeowners make better decisions. Here’s a deep dive into what makes hardwood floors such a unique and enduring investment.

  1. The Wear Layer

This is the surface you see and touch. It’s also what you sand and refinish. In solid hardwood, the entire board is one material. In engineered hardwood, the wear layer is a thin slice of real wood atop a core.

  • Thicker wear layers = more refinishing potential
  • Common thicknesses: 2mm to 6mm in engineered floors
  1. The Core

In engineered flooring, the core may be plywood or high-density fiberboard (HDF). This gives the plank strength and stability, reducing warping and movement with humidity.

  1. The Finish

From oil-based polyurethane to water-based matte finishes, this is your floor’s defense system.

  • Oil-based: Deeper tone, longer drying time
  • Water-based: Fast drying, low odor, clearer finish
  • Natural oils: Offer a rustic, breathable look but require more frequent maintenance
  1. Edges and Ends
  • Micro-bevel edges: Slight groove between planks—ideal for hiding slight irregularities
  • Square edges: Seamless look but require more precise installation
  • Click-lock vs. tongue-and-groove: Engineered floors may float or be glued; solid hardwood is typically nailed
  1. Plank Size and Style

Wider planks create a modern, expansive feel. Narrow planks offer a classic, traditional look. Lengths vary too—random-length planks add authenticity, while uniform-length boards create clean lines.
